Remember, child, life is not a straight line. It cycles.
An inexplicable explosion rocks the antiquities collection of a London museum and the race begins to determine how it happened, why it happened, and what it means.
Lady Kara Kensington’s family paid a high price in money and blood to found the gallery that now lies in ruins. Her search for answers leads Kara and her friend Safia al-Maaz, the gallery’s curator, into a world they never dreamed existed. Evidence exposed by the tragedy suggests that Ubar, a lost city buried beneath the Arabian desert, is more than mere legend…and that something astonishing is waiting there.
The two extraordinary women and their guide, Omaha Dunn, are not the only ones being drawn to the desert. Former U.S. Navy SEAL Painter Crowe, a covert government operative and head of an elite counter-espionage team, is hunting down a dangerous turncoat and the trail is pointing him toward Ubar.
What is hidden below the sand is more than a valuable relic of ancient history. It is an ageless power that lives and breathes. Many lives have already been destroyed by ruthless agencies dedicated to guarding its mysteries and harnessing its might. The end may be at hand for Kara, Safia, Crowe, and all of the interlopers who wish to expose its mysteries, as it prepares to unleash the most terrible storm of all…
Hi friends! So, this review is going to be different from any I’ve done before because this book is unlike any I’ve read before. Earlier in the year I started to get into treasure hunting/adventure movies/shows/books and whenever I Googled books in this area this was the novel and series that kept popping up. I decided to go with the audiobook because it was a lengthy novel, and I was not disappointed!
This novel is just a long series of exciting moments, strung together with a central mission to find a hidden city and discover a long lost secret. The novel focuses on this rag-tag group of specialists who are all incredibly smart and strong and courageous and witty, working together to solve a mystery and make history at the same time. Along the way, there are some central tensions that arise and some are personal and professional, but all are deeply interesting and thrilling. I was never bored while I was listening to this because not only are we following all these amazing characters but we’re also traveling all over the world with them. This novel is literally one big thrill ride, from beginning to end.
Also, just gonna throw this out there: OMAHA DUNN DESERVES HIS OWN STORY. Okay, I loved him, but moving right along.
I’m not gonna lie; this book is heavy. Its wordy and has a lot going on at once and has a bunch of different characters and all these burners are on at once. I fully expect that had I been reading this in the traditional form I probably wouldn’t like it, but I really enjoyed this as an audiobook. It was so long it was like I was listening to a whole TV series or something, but I didn’t get lost unless it was my own fault like if I was doing something while it played and I zoned out on the book then I would get lost, but it was easy to stay with it if I was paying attention. There’s a lot here, but nothing that gets too confusing to handle.
Also, the narrator for this is really great. I have this thing about men narrating women’s voices and I always think they do a weird job but he wasn’t half bad. There were a lot of different accents going on here too, but he handled it so well! Now that I’m thinking about it I kind of miss his voice…
Basically, this was just a fun thrill ride of an adventure novel! It was my first dip into action/adventure novels and I have a feeling it won’t be my last. I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the series soon, but my library does have a few of the other audiobooks so I’ll be checking them out sooner or later! If you’re into action, adventure, history, a dash of romance, a pinch of magic, some travelling, and lots of fighting then this one is probably for you!
