The right words can bind someone more effectively than chains.

A twist of fate…

Devon Ravenel, London’s most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities… and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl’s three innocent sisters are still occupying the house… along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon’s own.

A clash of wills…

Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny—and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains:

Can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she’s ever known?

Line

My God, did I love this book. It was like the juiciest soap opera and had the most hysterical moments, amazing visuals, and such a wonderful story. I think that when anyone asks me for a HR rec, I’ll be telling them to read this. It was like crack to me.

I got a new job where I literally just drive around all day and so this was the best way to get through my work day! I would be absolutely dying laughing one moment, swooning the next, and completely shocked by some of the revelations and conversations. It was such a great book to start 2020 with!

cold-hearted rake (2)I can’t say that I was crazy about Kathleen, I did find her a bit stuck up even for HR standards, but Devon Ravenel is my new book boyfriend. He was so snarky and sassy and funny and sweet and sexy and gosh, I was obsessed with him. The whole novel had a complete cast of characters that were both eccentric and serious, at times. I loved that we got to see a lot of sides to this story and we weren’t ‘stuck’ with just Devon and Kathleen, but instead we got to experience the full Ravenel household from multiple different characters. The way it read really did remind me of a soap opera and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more.

This was, admittedly, my first Lisa Kleypas novel and I can see why she’s often considered the queen of HR. I know this is one of her newer series, so it’s understandable if this series is one of her better technical works as she’s been honing her skills, but I really loved every aspect of this book. The writing was precise, rich in detail, and timed perfectly in terms of comedy and romance. It was so immensely enjoyable and very well plotted, I had a hard time turning it off to get anything else done. This novel was the epitome of why I have grown to love HR so much. I do have some of her other books, but this was the only audiobook my library had available, which is why I picked this series to start with over her others. I promise to get to the others she’s written, as well!

I’m already halfway through the next in the series, Marrying Winterborne, and I can already safely say I’m going to be hooked on this series. I absolutely love this narrator, Mary Jane Wells, too. She has the perfect voice for literally all the characters in this book and she made the audiobook experience a great one! 2020 is off to a great start with this!

Happy reading
