“I’m soon to become a respectable southern married lady. My sleuthing days are over.”

Librarian Lucy’s wedding is at stake when a murder interrupts her engagement celebrations. To make it down the aisle, she’ll have to find the killer to save the date in the 8th book in the Lighthouse Library mysteries.

They’re getting married! Lucy Richardson and Connor McNeil have announced their engagement. Their friends throw a party for the couple at Coquina Beach, close to Lucy’s beloved Bodie Island Lighthouse Library.

As they’re packing up the presents and the (few) leftovers from Josie’s Cozy Bakery, who should arrive, but Richard Eric Lewiston III, Lucy’s former almost-fiancé and his overbearing mother Evangeline. Push comes to love when Evangeline makes no secret of why she’s here: to get Lucy and Ricky back together.

Lucy isn’t temped in the least, and Ricky is nothing but embarrassed at his mother’s desperate ploy. Before returning to Boston Evangeline throws a dinner party at Jake’s Seafood Bar for a reluctant Lucy and her family. Lucy hopes to get the dinner over with and see Evangeline and Ricky returning to Boson. But when a body is found at the restaurant’s kitchen door, Lucy is again forced to unwillingly put on her detective’s hat and do what she can to save her family and her engagement. Meanwhile, the classic novel reading club is reading The Hound of the Baskervilles, and open war breaks out in the Lighthouse Library when Lucy agrees to temporarily take care of a dog named Fluffy, but Charles the library cat has other ideas.

I’m back with another glowing review for the Lighthouse Library Mystery series from Eva Gates! I’ve been reading, reviewing and loving this series since I started my blog back in 2017 and I don’t see that changing any time soon! Every time I pick up a book from this series it feels like coming home; it’s so comforting to be able to come back and see what all my Outer Banks friends are up to.

This installment finds Lucy and Connor in the beginning stages of their engagement and starting to think about buying a home together and planning the wedding. What starts as a fun engagement party with all their friends and family quickly takes a turn when Lucy’s ex-fiancé turns up at the party, maybe to win her back. Of course, at some point, there is a murder and Lucy ends up quite firmly in the middle of the investigation!

Eva Gates just keeps getting better and better! Not only do I adore her writing style and the characters she’s created here, but she always delivers when it comes to the mystery. I’m frequently left guessing and just as soon as I think I have something figured out, it turns out I was wrong. The novel always has ties/elements to the classic book that Lucy’s book club is reading and this time around it’s the Sherlock Holmes masterpiece The Hound of the Baskervilles. We can see similar plot lines involving dogs, threatened inheritance, and a spooky late night atmosphere. It’s always one of my favorite elements of the series and I think it’s so creative!

Lucy’s parents take a bigger role in this novel which was really fun considering we don’t see much, or really anything, of her mother and father. Which makes me sad because her mom is a hilarious side character! Speaking of hilarious characters, this book had me laughing out loud quite a few times. The banter is always top notch and it just gets better as we get more comfortable with the characters. It has the perfect blend of comic relief and spooky/creepy murder. They’re quick and fun to read, which is really why I love them.

Lots happened in this novel for our characters, too. With the upcoming wedding, the new house, and the newest staff member of the Lighthouse Library (I won’t spoil this one!) there is a lot that can happen in the next novel, and I cannot wait to get my hands on whatever it is!

Thank you SO much to Crooked Lane Books and Eva Gates for another opportunity to read and review the Lighthouse Library books early! I have a review for every single book in this series on my blog, just search under Cozy Mystery or Eva Gates!

Happy reading
